Commercial Model: Who Pays to Turn Sludge from Liability into Resource?

Sludge is a liability. Period.

It is an unavoidable consequence of wastewater treatment, and somebody has to pay to manage it. Yet embedded within that liability are potentially valuable resources — organic carbon, nutrients and energy. The commercial challenge is that extracting those resources also costs money.

This distinction is important. Resource recovery does not automatically make sludge treatment commercially self-sustaining. The value of the recovered product can offset part of the cost, but in most cases it cannot be expected to carry the entire economics of sludge treatment.
