Two Countries. One Corridor.

The India–Slovenia relationship brings together two economies of very different scale but with highly complementary capabilities. This inaugural factbook provides a quick reference to the economic, industrial and innovation characteristics of both countries — and the bilateral relationship connecting them.

India's significance to Slovenia extends beyond its domestic market. Its manufacturing ecosystem, engineering and digital capabilities and commercial relationships across Africa, the Gulf and Southeast Asia provide Slovenian businesses with a potential platform for localisation, commercialisation and expansion into the wider Global South.

Slovenia's economic significance is considerably greater than its population suggests. Manufacturing represents approximately 23–24% of GDP, while its industrial companies participate extensively in European manufacturing and automotive supply chains.

Its position on the North Adriatic adds a major logistics advantage. The Port of Koper handled 1.27 million TEU in 2025, with rail connections into major Central European markets including Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The bilateral trade relationship is already concentrated in relatively high-value sectors. India's major exports to Slovenia include pharmaceuticals, defence equipment, industrial machinery and organic chemicals, while Slovenia supplies

India with industrial machinery, electrical equipment, chemicals and precision products.

The most obvious weakness is investment: bilateral trade has grown considerably faster than cross-border investment. This makes FDI, joint ventures, localisation and co-manufacturing a logical next frontier for the relationship.

India–Slovenia: Key Milestones

• 1992 — Diplomatic relations established following Slovenia's independence.
  

• 1993–2024 — 19 bilateral agreements and MoUs developed across trade, science and technology, standards, investment protection, taxation, sport, academia and environmental collaboration.
  

• 2019 — IIT Kanpur and Space-SI cooperation established in support of the Clean Ganga programme, creating an important technology and environmental collaboration between the two countries.
  

• 2024 — New institutional partnerships, including cooperation linking Uttarakhand's Valley of Flowers National Park with Slovenia's Triglav National Park and G.B. Pant University with Slovenia's Agricultural Institute.
  

• Apr 2024 — India–Slovenia SITE Network launched to help develop the next phase of bilateral technology, industrial, project, investment and market collaboration.
  

• November 2025 — 10th India–Slovenia Joint Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation held in New Delhi.
  

• January 2026 — EU–India Free Trade Agreement negotiations concluded, creating an important new backdrop for future India–Slovenia economic relations. The agreement is not yet in force and remains subject to the required approval and ratification processes.
